The vrat-katha, told in the Surya Purana, frames the fast as Sage Vasishtha's counsel to a grieving Rama searching for Sita — a remedy for the pain of separation and bewilderment. Vasishtha then narrates the older tale of Bhadravati, a city on the Saraswati ruled by King Dyutiman. A pious merchant named Dhanapala had a son, Dhrishtabuddhi, who gambled away his life and was cast out. Sage Kaundinya prescribed this single Ekadashi; the katha says it burned his sins and carried him to Vaikuntha on Garuda. The Kurma Purana repeats the same promise — release from the 'web of delusion'. That word — moha — is the hinge. Just as Mohini's beauty bewitched the asuras into surrendering the amrita, the fast is meant to strip the devotee of the attachments that keep amrita — liberation — out of reach.
