Frequently Asked Questions
When is Khichadi Amavasya in 2027?
Khichadi Amavasya 2027 falls on Thursday, 7 January 2027. Amavasya tithi runs from 11:14 PM, 6 Jan to 01:54 AM, 8 Jan IST, as calculated for Ujjain. Times shift by a few minutes for other cities.
What is Khichadi Amavasya?
The new moon of Magha — the most crowded bathing day of the Magh Mela and Kumbh Mela at Prayagraj's Triveni Sangam. In Bihar and Purvanchal it is called Khichadi Amavasya because households cook and give away khichdi of rice, urad dal, sesame and jaggery as the day's main act of charity.
Why is Khichadi Amavasya observed?
The 'khichdi' name belongs to the eastern Gangetic plain. From Makar Sankranti onwards, Bihar, Mithila and Purvanchal eat and donate khichdi through the cold weeks; the run ends on this Magha Amavasya with a final, larger giving — usually rice, black urad dal, sesame seeds (til) and jaggery, the same warming foods prescribed for ancestral offerings. Pilgrims who can reach Prayagraj bathe at the Triveni Sangam at sunrise, since the Ganga is believed to turn to amrit (nectar) on this tithi — the lore traces back to the Samudra Manthan pot, drops of which are said to have fallen at Prayag. Many also keep mauna (a vow of silence) through the day, which is why the same date is widely called Mauni Amavasya. Til-tarpan for ancestors is performed on the riverbank before the khichdi is cooked.
Which prarthanas are recited on Khichadi Amavasya?
Ganga Ashtakam and Pitru Devata Mantra are recited on Khichadi Amavasya. You can listen to them with audio on this page.
