The vrat katha, attributed to the Brahma-Vaivarta Purana, is a chain of tellings: Brahma told it to Narada, Bhishma repeated it to Narada, and Krishna narrated it to Yudhishthira. The story promises that fasting on Kamika wipes out even Brahma-hatya — the sin of killing a Brahmin — and frees the observer from Yama's judgement. The name Kamika means "desired," and the day is also called Pavitra or Pavitropana Ekadashi, observed to relieve Pitra Dosha (ancestral affliction). Two ritual details stand out. First, Tulasi: a single leaf offered to Vishnu is said to outweigh charity of gold and silver, and merely seeing the Tulasi plant on this day is held to clear sins. Second, devotees light lamps of ghee or sesame oil at Krishna temples through the night.
