What is Kamada Ekadashi?
The first Ekadashi of the new Hindu year, falling just after Chaitra Navaratri and Rama Navami. Its Varaha Purana story tells of the Gandharva singer Lalit, cursed into a man-eating demon by King Pundarika — and freed when his wife Lalita transferred to him the merit of this single day's fast.
Why is Kamada Ekadashi observed?
The katha is narrated by Krishna to Yudhishthira, repeating what Sage Vasishtha once told King Dilipa. In King Pundarika's city of Ratnapura, the Gandharva Lalit was singing in court without his wife Lalita beside him. Distracted by her absence, he stumbled over the melody. A snake-courtier reported him, and the furious king cursed him to become a cannibal demon. Lalita climbed the Vindhya mountains, found Sage Shringi, and on his advice kept the Chaitra Shukla Ekadashi fast — then gave the merit to her husband, lifting the curse at once. The couple were carried to Vishnuloka on the Pushpaka Vimana. Because merit here can be transferred, the vrat is said to wipe out even Brahmahatya, the sin of killing a brahmana — the specific claim that sets Kamada apart from other Ekadashis.
