What is Jyeshtha Amavasya?
The new moon of Jyeshtha month is one of the busiest dates in the North Indian calendar — it carries Shani Jayanti (the birth of Lord Shani) and Vat Savitri Vrat on the very same day, when married women tie white thread around a banyan tree for their husband's long life.
Why is Jyeshtha Amavasya observed?
The Vat Savitri fast retells a Mahabharata episode: Savitri followed Yama into the forest and argued her husband Satyavan's soul back from the god of death. Satyavan had collapsed under a banyan (vat) tree while cutting wood — so the banyan, famed for living over a hundred years, became the symbol of a long marriage. Women circle it clockwise, winding raw white thread around the trunk. The same vrat splits across calendars: North Indian states (Purnimanta) keep it on Jyeshtha Amavasya, while Maharashtra, Gujarat and the southern states (Amanta) observe it fifteen days later as Vat Purnima. In Odisha it is called Sabitri Brata, with nine fruits and nine flowers offered to the Devi, and the fast is broken with water used to wash the husband's feet. The same day's Shani Jayanti worship is directed at Yama's brother — Shani.
