The Magha-month Sankashti Chaturthi, kept mainly in North India by mothers fasting from sunrise to moonrise for their sons' long life. Its signature offering — til (sesame) pounded with jaggery into a mound or laddoo — gives the day its other name, Til-Kuta Chauth.

About
Two kathas anchor the day. In the first, a potter cannot get his kiln to fire and, on a priest's advice, the king orders each family to offer a child to the flames; an old woman's son is saved when she prays to Sakat Mata, and the goddess's compassion gives the fast its meaning. The second tells of two sisters-in-law and Ganesha, where the younger one's honesty is rewarded. The fast is broken only after sighting the moon and offering arghya. Sakat Mata has her own shrine in Sakat village, Rajasthan, near Alwar. The alias Vakra-Tundi Chaturthi invokes Ganesha's curved-trunk form, while in Maharashtra the same tithi is observed as Lambodara Sankashti Chaturthi.
