What is Devshayani Ekadashi?
The first Ekadashi of Chaturmas — the four-month period when Vishnu is said to rest on Shesha Naga in the cosmic milk ocean. Falling on Ashadha Shukla Ekadashi (June–July), it is the climax of the Pandharpur Wari, when Warkari pilgrims arrive on foot at the Vitthal temple in Maharashtra.
Why is Devshayani Ekadashi observed?
The Vrat Katha, drawn from the Padma Purana, is the story of King Mandhata of the Ikshvaku line. A three-year drought struck his kingdom, and Sage Angiras told him the cure was not penance but this fast — observed by the whole household, it brought back the rains. From the same day begins Chaturmas, when weddings and other auspicious rites are paused until Prabodhini Ekadashi four months later. In Maharashtra the day belongs to Pandharpur. Warkari pilgrims walk for weeks in groups called dindis, carrying the padukas (sandals) of saints like Dnyaneshwar and Tukaram, and bathe in the Chandrabhaga river before darshan of Vitthal — a black-stone image, hands on hips, standing on a brick. The Yadavas of Devagiri built the main temple in the 12th century.
What are the other names for Devshayani Ekadashi?
