The day's vrat katha is not about Vishnu directly but about Sage Kaundinya and his wife Sushila. She ties the Ananta thread and prospers; her husband, dismissive of the rite, tears it off and burns it. Ruin follows, and he wanders the forest searching for Ananta to make amends. The thread is therefore treated as Vishnu's own residence — usually tied on the right arm for men and the left for women, after a fourteen-fold offering. Alongside Vishnu, devotees also worship Yamuna and Sheshnag, the serpent on whose coils Ananta rests. The same tithi carries a second life in Maharashtra: the uttarpuja (farewell rite) is performed for the household Ganesha, and the idol is taken in procession to a river or the sea, marking his return to Kailash.
