The weight of this day comes from Yama. As ruler of Bharani, he is believed to release the souls of recently departed family members so they can receive offerings directly. The Dharmasindhu prescribes this rite mainly in the first year after a death, though many families repeat it yearly. The ritual itself is a Parvan Shraddha. The priest first does tarpan — pouring water mixed with black sesame, barley, kusha grass and white flour. Then comes pindadan, where rounded balls of rice, cow's milk, ghee, sugar and honey are offered to three generations of ancestors. Crows are fed before the Brahmin eats, since they are seen as messengers carrying the food to the pitrus. The Markandeya Purana promises that satisfied ancestors grant progeny, wealth, long life and final liberation.
