Second of the ten Mahavidyas, Tara is honoured on Chaitra Shukla Navami — known as Tara-Ratri. The Swatantra Tantra places her birth beside the Cholana lake west of Mount Meru, where she took blue form as Nila-Saraswati to slay the demon Hayagriva.

Tara's living centre is Tarapith in Birbhum, Bengal, on the Dwarka river — one of the few major Hindu temples where left-handed Tantric rites (the Panchamakara, or five forbidden offerings) are openly practised. The village is named for Sati's eyeball, 'tara' in Bengali, said to have fallen here; the primordial stone idol shows Tara suckling Shiva after the Halahala poison. Lore credits sage Vasishtha as her first sadhaka. Frustrated by ordinary worship, he is said to have learned the unorthodox 'Chinachara' (China-path) method and won her grace at Tarapith — which is why Tara is called Vasishtharadhita. She is worshipped in three linked forms: Ekajata, Ugratara and Nila-Saraswati, the last invoked for vak-siddhi, command over speech.
