What is Sheetal Ashtami?
The one day a Hindu kitchen goes cold: no fire is lit, and the family eats food cooked the night before — which is why the day is called Basoda, 'stale food'. Observed on Chaitra Krishna Ashtami, just after Holi, in honour of Sheetala, the goddess of pox and fevers.
Why is Sheetal Ashtami observed?
Sheetala is shown riding a donkey, holding a broom, a water pot and neem leaves — a broom to sweep away filth, water and neem to cool fevered skin. The Skanda Purana and Bhavishya Purana name her as the goddess who guards households from smallpox, measles, boils and eye disease. The cold-food rule has a seasonal logic: the festival sits in the turn from winter to summer, the old peak season for pox outbreaks, so the kitchen hearth is rested and only cooling foods are eaten. The bhog reflects this — in the North, dahi-vada, pakodi, chaat-papdi, puri and pua with curd and buttermilk; in Rajasthan and Marwar, bajra roti, bajra khichdi and kheer. Gujarat keeps a parallel fast called Shitala Satam, but times it to the day before Krishna Janmashtami instead.
