Raja Sankranti
Raja Parba marks the three days when Bhudevi — the Earth goddess — is believed to menstruate before the monsoon. From Mithuna Sankranti in mid-June, Odias halt all ploughing, digging and even barefoot walking. Girls swing on rope swings tied to mango trees and sing Raja geeta.

About
The festival's name comes from 'rajas', the Sanskrit word for menstruation. For three days the earth is treated as a menstruating woman who needs rest, so cooking on grinding stones, tilling, and walking barefoot are all stopped. The day before, called Sajabaja, is spent cleaning the grinding stones and pounding spices in advance. Unmarried girls wear new saris, paint their feet red with alata (a lac dye), and are freed from housework — mirroring the rest given to the earth. The signature food is poda pitha, a rice-and-jaggery cake slow-baked overnight. On the fourth day, Vasumati Snana, the household grinding stone stands in for Bhudevi: women bathe it in turmeric water, dress it with flowers, and offer seasonal fruits — the goddess's ritual bath after her period.
