Holi

Holi has two halves: the bonfire of Holika Dahan on Phalguna Purnima night, and Rangwali Holi the next morning, when people drench each other in gulal (dry colour) and water. The fire recalls Prahlada surviving Holika's pyre; the colours recall Krishna smearing pigment on Radha in Braj.

Holi 2027 is on Monday, 22 March 2027, on Pournami tithi.

Dates are for India (IST). Muhurat and the panchanga for each day are on the Holi page.

About Holi

The bonfire goes back to a story in the Bhagavata Purana. The demon king Hiranyakashipu had already tried snakes and elephants against his Vishnu-loving son Prahlada. He then asked his sister Holika — who owned a fire-proof shawl gifted by Brahma — to sit in a pyre with the boy on her lap. The shawl flew to Prahlada; Holika burned. The colour play comes from a different tale, told in the Garga Samhita: the dark-skinned child Krishna complained to Yashoda that Radha was fair, and she told him to simply paint Radha any colour he liked. Regional forms diverge sharply. At Barsana in Braj, women drive off visiting men from Nandgaon with long staves in Lathmar Holi. In Bengal and Odisha it becomes Dol Jatra, with Radha and Krishna placed on a decorated swing.
