About Santoshi

Santoshi Mata is a young goddess by Hindu standards — her worship spread across India only after the 1975 film 'Jai Santoshi Maa'. Popular tradition names her the daughter of Ganesha. Her aarti pictures her in a golden robe set with diamonds and emeralds, lotus-faced, seated on a gold throne. Devotees keep her vrat for sixteen straight Fridays, offering only gur and chana (jaggery and roasted chickpeas) — the simple gifts that, her aarti says, gave her the name Santoshi, 'the contented one'. The vrat carries one strict rule: nothing sour may be eaten or served that day.
