About Brihaspati

Brihaspati is the Devaguru — teacher of Indra and the gods — and the counterweight to Shukracharya, who teaches the asuras. The Brahma-Vaivarta Purana pictures him gold-skinned and four-armed, holding a staff, rosary, and water pot, riding a golden horse-drawn chariot under a yellow banner around Mount Meru. He was born in the line of sage Angiras and rules Sagittarius and Pisces. As the planet Jupiter, he governs Thursday (Guruvar), named for him. Devotees chant his Kavacham at dawn, noon, and dusk for eloquent speech, and his beej mantra 16,000 times over 40 Thursdays to repair a weak Jupiter in the birth chart.
