Overview of Hindu ЁЯХЙя╕П Panchanga

Introduction

The Hindu Panchanga is a calendar used by Hindus all over the world. It's different because it pays attention to both the ЁЯМХ Moon and the тШАя╕П Sun. This type of calendar is known as "lunisolar". On the other hand, the Gregorian calendar (like the one used in Western countries) is a solar calendar which only follows the Sun.

Let's break down what this means:

ЁЯМХ Lunar Aspect: Every night, the Moon looks a bit different. Sometimes, it's a bright full circle (full moon ЁЯМХ), and other times, you can't see it at all (new moon ЁЯМС). The Moon goes through a pattern of these shapes ЁЯМСЁЯМУЁЯМХЁЯМЧЁЯМС, taking about a month. In the Hindu Panchanga, these Moon shapes, or phases, are very important. They help divide the year into months based on the Moon's cycle.

So, simply, the Hindu Panchanga is like a diary that follows the Moon's journey and its changing shapes ЁЯМСЁЯМУЁЯМХЁЯМЧЁЯМС to keep track of time. This is different from the calendar most people use, where months have fixed numbers of days and don't change with the Moon.

тШАя╕П Solar Aspect: The Earth ЁЯМП also circles the Sun, completing one round in about a year. The Hindu Panchanga tracks this, too. It matches the Moon-based months with Earth's trip around the Sun. This makes sure the calendar matches the seasons, which are affected by Earth's position in relation to the Sun.

The Hindu Panchanga (pancha-anga) is made up of five parts, often called its "limbs". These are Tithi, Vaara, Nakshatra, Yoga and Karana. These limbs and a few more elements work to create the Hindu Panchanga, guiding Hindus in timing their festivals, rituals, and daily activities. We'll explore these more in later chapters.

Since the Hindu Panchanga looks at both the Moon and the Sun, it's more complex than the Gregorian calendar, which many people use and which only follows the Sun. The Gregorian calendar sticks to fixed months and leap years to stay in line with Earth's path around the Sun. But the Hindu Panchanga sometimes adds an extra month (called Adhika Masa) every few years to keep up with both the Moon's and Sun's movements.

Festivals like Diwali and Holi are set by the Moon's cycle, showing how the calendar helps align human activities with what's happening in nature.
