Sage Dadhichi and the Param Vir Chakra

Let’s dive into the story of Sage Dadhichi and how his ultimate sacrifice, which helped the gods defeat evil, is immortalized in the Param Vir Chakra, inspiring every soldier who fights for the nation.

In a great war between the Devas and Asuras, Vritra, a serpent demon rose to power. He kept all the rivers captive which caused chaos in the universe. The Gods were worried and Indra, the king of heavens, approached Lord Vishnu for a solution. He revealed that the only weapon capable of defeating Vritra was one made from the bones of a sage. Vishnu also told him to approach sage Dadhichi.

When Indra approached Dadhichi and explained the situation, the sage did not hesitate for a moment. Understanding the importance of the greater good, Dadhichi agreed to sacrifice his life for the sake of the universe. Indra’s vajra was created from Dadhichi’s bones, and with this powerful weapon, Indra was finally able to defeat Vritra and restore peace to the heavens.

The Param Vir Chakra, India’s highest gallantry award, features the State Emblem with four replicas of Indra’s vajra, in honor of Sage Dadhichi’s selflessness, courage, and the willingness to give up everything for the protection of others—values that resonate deeply with the soldiers honored by the Param Vir Chakra.

The medal was not designed by an Indian but by a Swiss born lady, Eve Yvonne Maday de Maros. She came to India as a nineteen year old to marry army officer Vikram Khanolkar. She fell in love with India and changed her name to Savitri Bai Khanolkar. She learned to speak fluent Marathi, Sanskrit and Hindi and she had a great understanding of Indian culture and history. She ended up designing the Param Vir Chakra.

Just as Dadhichi willingly gave up his life to forge a weapon to defeat evil, the brave soldiers of India put their lives on the line to defend the country. This connection between ancient mythology and modern-day bravery is a reminder that courage, sacrifice, and devotion to duty are timeless virtues.
