Maha Kumbh is a major festival in India, that is celebrated in a cycle of twelve years. It draws millions of people around the globe making it the largest religious gathering in the world. More than a festival, the Maha Kumbh can be viewed as a spiritual experience. Hindus believe that bathing in the Triveni Sangam during this auspicious time washes away sins and liberates the soul from the cycle of birth and death.
The Kumbha in Kumbha Mela means pitcher or pot. Its origin is in the legend of Samudra Manthana when the gods and demons churned the ocean for the nectar of immortality (amrit). When Vishnu was carrying amrit in a pot , a scuffle broke out and four drops of amrit fell at four places - Prayag, Haridwar, Nasik and Ujjain which are called tirthas where one can find salvation.
These sites are the venues for the Kumbh Mela, rotating every three years between them. The Ardh Kumbh at the six-year mark is celebrated in Haridwar and Prayagraj. The Maha Kumbh is exclusively at Prayagraj every 12 years.
Maha Kumb 2025, starting from January 13 to February 26 will feature six auspicious bathing days which includes three shahi sans (royal baths). The bathing days are - January 13, 2025: Paush Purnima, January 14, 2025: Makar Sankranti (First Shahi Snan),January 29, 2025: Mauni Amavasya (Second Shahi Snan), February 3, 2025: Basant Panchami (Third Shahi Snan),February 12, 2025: Maghi Purnima, and February 26, 2025: Maha Shivratri (Final Snan).
Apart from the spiritual practices, Kumbh Mela is also a celebration of India’s rich cultural heritage. One can expect devotional music, classical dance, folk performances, and vibrant art displays. In recent years, the Kumbh has attracted international attention, with scholars, spiritual seekers, and tourists from around the world immersing themselves in this unique experience.
