Introduction
Jala Neti is a Shuddhi (cleansing) kriya that focuses on purifying the nostrils. It is an excellent method to rid the nose of congestion and phlegm, promoting clear breathing and overall nasal health. Scientifically, nasal irrigation has been shown to improve mucociliary clearance, reduce nasal inflammation, and alleviate symptoms of sinusitis, allergic rhinitis, and common colds by flushing out allergens, pathogens, and excess mucus.
Items Needed:
- A thin, clean cotton towel
- A nasal spout (preferably plastic for ease of handling and comfort)
- A small basin to collect the waste water
- Lukewarm water with 1 teaspoon of normal salt added (the salt enhances the cleansing process by matching the body's natural salinity, reducing nasal irritation, and aiding in the removal of mucus and allergens. It is important to use distilled, sterile, or properly boiled and cooled water to ensure cleanliness.)
Procedure:
ONE: Prepare the Neti Pot: Fill the nasal spout with lukewarm water mixed with a teaspoon of salt.
TWO: Positioning
- Start with the right nostril.
- Lean your head slightly forward and to the left, creating an angle that facilitates water flow.
- Keep your mouth open to allow normal breathing.
THREE: Inserting the Spout
- Gently insert the spout into the right nostril.
- Slowly tilt the pot, letting the water flow into the right nostril. The water will pass through the nasal passages and exit from the left nostril.
- Hold the basin under your left nostril to collect the waste water.
FOUR: Repeat on the Other Side
- Switch nostrils and repeat the same process with the left nostril.
FIVE: Post-Cleansing
- After the neti pot is empty, stop the process.
- Raise your head and use the cotton towel to gently blow air through your nostrils, removing any remaining moisture.
SIX: Final Drying
- Stand with your feet together, bend forward slightly, and blow out through each nostril forcefully to ensure the nasal passages are completely dry.
Tips for Beginners:
While Jala Neti might feel unfamiliar at first, it becomes easier and more comfortable with regular practice.
Benefits:
Jala Neti helps maintain nasal hygiene, prevents blockages, and keeps the nasal passages clear for smooth airflow. Regular practice supports respiratory health and enhances overall well-being.
